‘Drug peddler’ killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion in Joypurhat in the early hours today.

A drug trader, Sohel Rana, 36, was accused of 10 different cases.

Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team conducted a drive at Keshabpur village in Panchbibi upazila around 2:30am, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Azmal Hossain, camp commander of Joypurhat Rab unit.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug peddlers started firing on them prompting the Rab members to fire back in retaliation, leaving Sohel Rana dead on the spot, the official said.

His body was sent to Joypurhat Modern Hospital for autopsy.

A pistol, one magazine and 60 bottles of phensidyl were recovered from the spot.
