Rony gets life in jail for Eskaton murders

Former lawmaker’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony has been handed life in jail for shooting down two people in a drunken state at Dhaka’s Eskaton in April 2015.

Judge Md Manzurul Imam of Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court in Dhaka said Rony “deserved the death penalty” for his crimes.

But, he was sentenced to lifeterm imprisonment (30 years in prison) owing to the “physical and mental state” he was in while committing the crime, the judge said in his sentencing.

Rony, son of former Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, has also been fined Tk 50,000. In default, he will have to suffer six additional months in jail.

The verdict was delivered in presence of the convict in a crowded courtroom.

According to the charge sheet, a drunken Rony indiscriminately fired gunshots from inside his car near the Dilu Road area of New Eskaton in Dhaka on April 13, 2015.

Rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub were both injured in the incident. Later, they both lost the battle for life at hospital.

Hakim's mother Monowara Begum filed the murder case on April 15, 2015. Detectives charged him with double murder on July 21, 2015. He was indicted March 6, 2016.
