70-year-old visually-challenged Karamat in HC in ‘gayebi mamla’

70-year-old visually-challenged Karamat Ali on Monday came to the High Court Division seeking anticipatory bail in a ‘gayebi mamla’ filed against him by police before the December 30 general election. 

The case accused Karamat Ali and 39 others of committing subversive activities and rioting by setting fire to a motorbike at village Banda Goaliya, Kheruadani union, Muktagaccha, Mymensingh on December 22, just eight days before the parliament elections.Karamat Ali came to the High Court along with the 39 accused in the case filed with the Muktagaccha Police Station on December 24.

Karamat Ali, wearing black goggles and roaming the Supreme Court premises with the support of a bamboo stick, drew attention of bystanders at noon when he was seen gossiping with other accused beside the SC’s sculpture. 

There is none to take care of Karamat as his wife and two sons died many years ago.Karamat is unable to move without support and he makes his life on alms from the well-off.On Monday, two benches of the High Court Division granted four-week ad interim anticipatory bails to about 200 people, who appeared in the court from different districts in the politically-motivated ‘gayebi case’ against opposition activists before and after the parliament elections.

It could not be known whether or not Karamat and 39 other accused were granted bail or not. 

On January 23, 45-year-old Tara Mia with a deformed arm, who was made one of the 52 accused in a ‘gayebi mamla’ made newspaper headlines as he was accused of attacking police at Mallikpur Bazar, Sunamganj on December 28, two days before the general election.The HC granted Tara Mia a six-week bail and asked him to surrender before the district and sessions judges’ court within six weeks.

Md Abidul Haque, lawyer who appeared for Tara Mia, submitted in the hearing that a physically-challenged person could not have attacked police. 

He was implicated in the case alleging that he was a BNP activist which he was not, submitted the lawyer.
