Suhrawardy Hospital fire doused, no casualty

Fire-fighters have doused the fire that broke out at a store room at Shaheed Suhrwardy Medical College Hospital at Sher-e-Banglanagar in the capital at around 8:20pm on Thursday.

Fire Service and Civil Defence director general Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan said the fire was doused at 8:20pm and there was no casualty.

He said first they evacuated the patients from the Intensive Care Unit and then brought out other patients.

At 8:40pm, the hospital authorities said there is no environment for providing medical service. The hospital authorities are sending the patients to different hospitals and clinics.

An anxious attendant said he could not trace his relative who was undergoing treatment at the hospital. He said he had gone out to bring some medicine before the fire broke out. 'There was a mobile with her but we fail to connect. We still do not know where she is takent,' he said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Biplab Kumar Sarkar said no harm caused to the patients.

Hospital sources said there were around 1,200 patients at the hospital.

The fire broke out on the first-floor storeroom of the new building of the hospital at about 5:50pm and 14 fire-fighting units rushed to the spot to douse the fire, fire service and civil defence control room duty officer Rasel Shikder said.

The firefighters had been trying to contain the fire until filing the report at 7:15pm, he said

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately, he said.

The hospital authorities have evacuated the patients to safer places. Critical patients and those who were admitted to Intensive Care Unit have been shifted to other hospitals.
