DNCC polls incomplete: EC Mahbub

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar says the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election is an incomplete election.

He said this to reporters at the Election Commission Secretariat on Thursday.

“This is an incomplete election because the election is held every five years but the elected candidate this time will perform his duties for a year only," he said.

Mahbub also said: “It is not afully participatory one, since all opposition parties did not take part in it. Because of this voters are not motivated to go to voting centres to cast their votes.”

Earlier in the day, Commissioner Mahbub visited a polling centre at Moghbazar Ispahani School to cast his vote and found quite a low presence of voters. He also visited five other polling centres.

“Only 385 out of 9,413 voters had exercised their franchise at 15 booths of the five centres from 8am to 10am. Polling agents of only the ruling party’s mayoral candidate were seen at the booths" he added.

Mahbub in his statement further said: “The election has to be free, fair, neutral, and legal. No partiality or lapse can be tolerated. The election is also a non-participatory one since the major opposition political parties are not taking part in it.”

“Law enforcement agencies have to provide fool-proof security to voters so they can cast their votes for their desired candidate. We expect that no matter what the political situation of the country is, it will have no influence on the electoral system,” the election commissioner said.
