‘Drug trader’ killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dhanpur in Sadar Dakkhin upazila early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Jamal Haq alias Jambu Mia, son of Hares Mia of Joynagar village in the upazila.

Being tipped off that a group of ‘drug traders’ has gathered in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there, said Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakkhin Model Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire, forcing them to fire back in ‘self-defense’, leaving Jamal injured with bullet while the others managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Jamal was wanted in 13 several cases, said the OC.

Meanwhile, police recovered 30 kgs of hemp and 2,000 Yaba pills from the spot.
