Tasvir, Faruque on seven-day remand

A Dhaka court on Sunday granted seven-day remand to two owners of Faruque Rupayan Tower at Banani in a case filed over Thursday’s deadly fire at the building that killed 26 people and injured over 100.

Metropolitan magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order after detective branch inspector Jalal Uddin produced the land owner SMHI Faruque and president of Faruque Rupayan Tower Owners Association Tasvir Ul Islam before the court and sought 10-day remand for interrogating them in custody.

Detective branch of police arrested Tasvir on Saturday night and Faruk early Sunday at their homes in Dhaka.

Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DB North) of Dhaka Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told New Age that they arrested the owners for negligence in maintenance of the building and illegally expanding it to 23-storey from the approved 18-storey.
