Jute mill workers continue strike

Jute mill workers of Bangladesh are continuing their unrelenting strike to press for a set of demands including implementation of a wage commission.

their demonstration began this morning for the second day of their 72-hour strike, unwavering in their demands.

Dhaka-Khulna highway was blocked at BDR Camp, Fulbari Gate, Doulatpur intersection, Atara and Natun Rasta intersection in city around 8:00am.

Rail link between Dhaka and Khulna remained suspended since morning in blockade, Manik Chandra Sarkar, station master of Khulna Railway Station, said.

“We will not move until our demands are met,” Humayun Kabir Khan, secretary of Platinum Jute Mill Employee Association, told this morning.

Additionally, they are demanding resignation of the chairman of Bangladesh Jute Mill Corporation (BJMC) and probe into alleged corruption of local BJMC officers in Khulna.

In Rajshahi, mill workers blockaded Dhaka-Rajshahi highway for an hour from 10:00am at Katakhali, at the outskirts of the city in numbers of around 200.

“We blocked the highway for an hour. Now we will demonstrate near our mill gate,” Shamim Hossain, secretary of Rajshahi Jute Mill Sramik Union, told The Daily Star.

Yesterday, jute mill workers blockaded Dhaka-Khulna highway and railway, and also the shuttle train service of Chittagong University at Chattogrram.

The pinnacle of their demand is the implementation of the National Wage Commission 2015. Others include clearing dues, and compensating for workers’ death.
