Rajuk at scene to bring down BGMEA building

Authorities are at Hatirjheel ready to bring down the BGMEA Complex, which has been standing illegally for 13 years on the canal.

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (Rajuk) has given a final two-hour leash to evacuate a branch of EXIM Bank housed inside the building before demolition.

“They have been given two hours to move their assets,” Oliur Rahman, executive magistrate of Rajuk, told The Daily Star at scene. “Others can use the time to move as well.”

Rajuk authorities led by the magistrate were at Begunbari, near the complex, with five bulldozers to start the demolishing process at 8:00am.

BGMEA has already moved most of its assets and offices to its new building at Uttara Sector 17, which was inaugurated by the prime minister on April 3.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) secured a final extension for their building on April 2 – for a year and 10 days.

The apex court's order was effective from April 12 that year to implement a previous verdict by Supreme Court that directed BGMEA to demolish the building.
