IS claims responsibility for attack on police in Dhaka

The Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, claimed to have wounded three police in a bombing on Monday, reports Malaysian media The Straits Times citing an international news agency.

Three people, including two policemen, have been injured after a crude bomb was hurled at them in Dhaka on Tuesday (Apr 29).

Two traffic constables and a member of community police were injured after the crude bomb exploded at the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue, said Dhaka metro police’s Assistant Commissioner Mishu Biswas.

A senior police officer, asking not to be named, said that the attack may have been due to the recent drive to evict street vendors from the area.

DMP Motijheel Zone’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Shibly Noman told Bangla Tribune, “There is a reason behind the attack and we are working on it. Details will be given later.”

However, in their first claimed attack in Bangladesh in more than two years, ISIS jihadists said they "detonated an explosive device" on a group of police, the SITE Intelligence Group reported.

According to the US-based group which monitors jihadist activity, the brief ISIS statement said the blast wounded three police on a road to Dhaka's Gulistan market.

Bangladesh has boosted security since April 21 Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka, which killed 253 and were carried out by jihadists affiliated to ISIS.
