Over 2,000 coastal homes damaged by cyclone Fani

As many as 2,243 homes in the coastal region were were partially damaged due to the impact of cyclone Fani, which weakened to a deep depression before entering Bangladesh on Saturday after battering the coasts of India’s Odisha.

However, crops remained unharmed, according to Disaster Management Secretary Md Shah Kamal.

He, however, said the extent of the full damages could be known within a week.

“An initial report from 19 coastal districts will be available by Monday (May 6),” Kamal added.
Two committees in each of the districts are working to assess the damages, said the secretary.

“The committees, headed by deputy commissioners (DCs) and Upazila executive officers (UNOs), will report over the primary damages within three working days.”

Kamal said that Fani had lost its power and was downgraded to deep land depression before it entered Bangladesh.

According to him, the weakened storm did not affect crops.

“According to weather forecasts, the storm could have caused a5 to 6 feet tidal waves and strong winds packing 180 to 200 kilometers per hours. But that did not happen as it weakened,” said Secretary Kamal.
