2 ‘yaba peddlers’ killed in Cox’s Bazar, Dinajpur ‘gunfights’

Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in separate “gunfights” with members of paramilitary force Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar and Dinajpur early today.

Of the deceased, Md Delwar Hossain, 45, hailing from Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur while the other’s identity could not be known.

In Cox’s Bazar, acting on a tip-off that a big consignment of yaba tablets is entering the country from Myanmar, a team of BGB-2 conducted a drive along Naf river and challenged a boat carrying some people around 1:30am.

Sensing danger, the drug peddlers opened fire, forcing the BGB members to fire back in self-defense that triggered a gunfight, said Commanding Officer of BGB-2 Lieutenant Colonel Foysal Hasan Khan.

After the gunfight, the BGB members recovered the body of an unidentified man and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, the BGB official said.

A sharp weapon and 10,000 yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

In Dinajpur, Delwar was held by a team of Joypurhat BGB Battalion-20 along with 958 yaba pills from Nandipur village yesterday morning.

Later, the BGB men raided Mongla village to recover stashed drugs based on information gleaned from the arrestee.

As the BGB team reached there, a gang of drug peddlers encircled the BGB members and opened fire. In retaliation, the BGB men fired back that triggered the “gunfight”, leaving Delwar dead on the spot.

Lt Col Rashed Mohammad Anisul Haque, commanding officer of Joypurhat BGB Battalion-20 confirmed the incident.

Later police recovered the body and sent it to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
