Rain halts water transport services on 43 routes of southern dists

Operations of all types of water vessels from Dhaka’s Sadarghat to 43 routes of 22 southern districts have been suspended due to the stormy weather.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended the operation around 10:45am today, Mobarak Hossain, BIWTA Public Relation Officer told this morning.

Meanwhile, movement of launches on Shimulia-Kathalbari routes in the Padma river remained suspended due to the same reason.

The water vessel operation on Daulatdia-Paturia route was disrupted for two hours till 10:30am due to the heavy rainfall in Manikganj.

However, ferry movement on the route was normal, BIWTA Assistant Managing Director Zillur Rahman said adding that a total of 19 ferries are running on the route to ensure a hassle-free journey for the Eid holidaymakers.

People were seen waiting in a long queue on the Paturia ghat following the two-hour disruption, he said. The rush on the route may increase during the Eid holiday, he added.
