Muslims in Bangladesh are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, one of their biggest religious festivals marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.
Millions of devotees thronged mosques, Eidgahs and makeshift prayer venues to offer Eid prayers - despite the intermittent rain that has showered the country since Wednesday morning.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted the people on this occasion.
The main Eid congregation in Dhaka was held at the National Eidgah on the premises of the Bangladesh Supreme Court at 8:30am. National Mosque Baitul Mukarram's Senior Pesh, Imam Hafez Muhammad Mizanur Rahman, led the first Eid Jamaat there.
President Hamid offered prayers there along with hundreds of people from all walks of life.
Cabinet members, Supreme Court judges, Parliament members, politicians, as well as senior civil and military officials, also attended the congregation.
The prime minister is currently in Finland on a four-day visit.
This year, a total of 568 Eid congregations will be held in Dhaka under the two city corporations.
Of those, 298 Eid congregations will be held under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and the rest 270 Eid congregations under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
A total of five Eid congregations will be held at Baitul Mukarram. The first, second and third jamaat were held at 7am, 8am, and 9am, while the next two are scheduled to be conducted at 10am and 10:45am.
Law enforcement agencies have enforced tight security measures in and around the main National Eidgah congregation.
Divisional, district, and upazila administrations and local government bodies have prepared for Eid-ul-Fitr in their respective areas.
Key traffic islands and light posts in Dhaka city have been decorated with miniature national flags and flags inscribed with “Eid Mubarak.” Designated government offices and other establishments have also been illuminated.
City corporations have kept children’s parks open with free entry for all visitors.
