Ex-MP Rana’s bail stayed

The chamber judge of the Appellate Division has stayed the High Court order that granted bail to former MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in a murder case.

Justice Nuruzzaman Noni of the Chamber Judge Court stayed the bail on Thursday, after hearing a petition filed by the state against Rana’s bail.

The judge sent the petition to a full court bench of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and fixed July 1 for the next hearing.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state during the hearing.

Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Basir Ullah filed the petition against the bail order.

The High Court, on Wednesday, granted Rana permanent bail in a case filed over the killing of two Juba League activists in 2012, paving the way for his release from jail.

Earlier in the day, former MP Rana was produced before Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court in Tangail for hearing over the murder case.

After hearing, Judge Rashed Kabir fixed July 4 for recording the statement of the witnesses.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rana was taken to Tangail Jail from Kashimpur Central Jail.

Rana has been linked to the murders of two Baghil union Juba League leaders—Mohammad Shamim and Mohammad Mamun—who went missing on July 16, 2012.

The following day, Shamim's mother filed a general diary at Tangail sadar police station.

Later, police arrested several suspects over the incident when two of the arrestees—Shahadat Hossain, 16 and Hiron Mia, 27—said that both of the Juba League leaders had been murdered on MP Rana's orders.

On March 6, the High Court issued a ruling and granted Rana six months of bail in the case. Later, the Supreme Court stayed the bail and ordered the ruling be settled.

On April 1, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order granting Rana bail in another case filed over freedom fighter Faruk’s murder.

Baghil union Jubo League leaders Mohammad Shamim and Mohammad Mamun went missing on July 16, 2012.

The following day, Shamim's mother filed a general diary at the Tangail sadar police station.

Following the matter, police arrested several suspects over the incident. Of them, two arrestees—Shahadat Hossain, 16 and Hiron Mia, 27— told the police that both of the Jubo League leaders were murdered on MP Rana's orders.
