Pay damages to Russel in installments

The High Court on Tuesday ordered Green Line Paribahan to pay compensation to Russel Sarkar through monthly installments of Tk 5 lakh.

Russel lost his leg after being run over by a bus of the company in the city's Dholaipar on April 28 last year.

The court on March 12 ordered Green Line to pay Tk 50 lakh to the victim within two weeks. The Appellate Division later upheld the order and asked the company to pay the money.

Green Line paid Tk 5 lakh to Russel on April 10. The court gave them one more month to pay the rest of Tk 45 lakh.

The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader on Tuesday ordered Green Line to pay the rest of the amount in installments.

They will have to pay within the first week of every month and submit a report on payment before the court within the 15th day of the month.

‘There's no scope to reduce the compensation money and it must be provided through installments,’ the court said during hearing on a petition seeking to reduce the amount.

A luxury coach of Green Line hit Russel's car from the behind as it stood stationary on the slope of Hanif Flyover on April 28 last year.

As Russel stepped out of the car to assess the damage, driver Kabir Hossain drove the bus over him and fled. Police later detained the bus and the driver.

Russel's left leg had to be amputated from the thigh down.
