Suspected robber killed in Pabna 'gunfight'

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with police at Sujanagar upazila in Pabna.

The incident occurred on Hasampur area of the upazila early Wednesday.

The deceased is Saiful Islam Geda alias Geda Lal, 30, a member of a local robber gang, who has several cases filed against him with Pabna and Manikganj police stations.

Sujanagar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Arvind Sarkar said police conducted a drive on Tuesday night and arrested Saiful from his residence.

Later, based on the information by provided by Saiful during primary interrogation, police raided Hasampur Eidgah field area, taking him along with them, to recover weapons.

However, sensing police presence, Saiful’s associates opened fire on the law enforcers which triggered a gunfight.

At one point, Saiful was shot in the crossfire and his associates managed to flee the scene.

Police took Saiful to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Three police personnel- Sub-Inspector Minarul Islam, Constable Amjad, and Constable Nurul Islam, were also injured in the gunfight.

They have been sent to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Law enforcement also recovered a firearm, two bullets, few sharp weapons, one pliers and two flashlights from the spot.
