2 killed in Rangamati landslide

Two people have been killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Kaptai upazila of Rangamati.

The deceased are Atal Barua, 50, and Sujoya Aung Marma, 42, former chairman of Kaptai upazila, Dildar Hossain, said.

According to local sources, around 11am on Saturday, Atal and Sujoya were riding a CNG auto-rickshaw on the Raikhali-Bangalhalia-Bandarban main road, when a landslide at Karigarpara under Raikhali union of Kaptai, killed them on the spot.

Until this report was written, the Fire Service is yet to reach the spot and recover the bodies.

Meanwhile, in Chittagong, a woman and her daughter were pulled out alive from a landslide that occurred around 10:30am at Arefin Nagar under Bayazid police station.

Shah Noor, 40, and her daughter Marjina, 18, were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital soon after the police, army and locals managed to rescue them, Sub-Inspector of Bayazid police station, Emdadul Haque, said.

"They were eating inside their shanty when a huge chunk of earth collapsed on them, burying them up their neck in mud," the sub-inspector said. "But they were pulled out alive."

Officer-in-Charge of Bayazid police station Ataur Rahman Khandker said: "There has been no casualty. The two who were buried under the landslide have been rescued."

According to Patenga Met office, in the last 24 hours till 12pm on Saturday, 94.2mm of rainfall has been recored.

Several places in the country, including the northern and southern regions, have been flooded by the constant rainfall for the last five days, and the rush of upstream water, leaving many people stranded in their homes and prompting eviction.
