Minni confessed to her involvement in Rifat murder: SP

Ayesha Siddiqua Minni has confessed to her involvement in the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif, Barguna Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain has said.

SP Maruf made the statement during a press conference at Barguna police station around 11am on Thursday.

He said: "Minni admitted to her involvement in the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif before her arrest, as well as during interrogation."

"She had been keeping close contact with her husband's murderer. She also attended a meeting with the other accused before executing Rifat's murder," he added.

When asked about the statements of the other accused regarding Minni's involvement in the murder, Maruf said he could not reveal the information as yet.

"However, police have gathered enough evidence to prove her [Minni’s] involvement in the murder," he said.

He further said Minni had been placed on five-day remand on the basis of her confession.

“We are trying to put everyone involved in the Rifat murder behind bars, and Minni’s confession has made it easier to unravel the case,” the SP added.

He also said Minni's father's press conference does not have any connection with her arrest, and they are investigating every detail related to the case.

"Police are not feeling any sort of political or human rights pressure. We are conducting our duties sincerely," SP Maruf said.

To date, 14 people have been arrested in connection with Rifat Sharif's murder. Of the fourteen, ten have confessed to their crimes, eight of whom have been sent to prison, and another being underage, is being held at a safe house.

Prime accused Nayan Bond was killed in a gunfight with police on July 2.
