Hospitalisation in districts still high

The rate of hospitalisation of dengue patients slowed down over the last couple of days while the hospitalisation of mosquito-caused fever patients remained still higher in the districts.

Meanwhile, dengue claimed another life in the capital on Friday taking the reported death toll to 185.

For the last three weeks since August 8, the number of dengue patients hospitalised in the districts have been higher than in the capital after people from the capital went to their village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha.

During these three weeks, at least 38,446 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in the country.

Among them, 21,590 are in the districts while 16,856 in the capital.

While the dengue outbreak this time also initially remained confined to the capital city, as had been the case since its first reported occurrence in 2000, it started spreading outside Dhaka in the fourth week of July.

The menace spread all over Bangladesh just in a week while its severity in outlying areas outweighed that in the capital in the subsequent week.

The total number of dengue patients hospitalised so far this year across the country rose to 69,435 on Friday with 40,344 in the capital and 29,091 in the districts.

In the past 30 days of August alone, at least 50,974 people were hospitalised with dengue while the number admitted to hospitals in July was at least 16,253.

In the 24 hours ending at 8:00am Friday, at least 1,025 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country, which was the lowest in a month.

Among the patients admitted in the 24 hours, 560 are in the districts and 465 in the capital.
On Friday, a dengue patient died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The deceased was identified as Munni Begum, 52, wife of Ali Ashraf from Kholamora of Keraniganj in Dhaka.

Her son Imran Hossain said Munni was admitted to the DMCH on August 28. She was diagnosed with dengue at the hospital.

She died at the medicine ward at about 9:00am on Friday.

DMCH police outpost in-charge Bachchu Miah said that her body was handed over to the family after the legal formalities.

While unofficial estimates put the figure of deaths from dengue at 185 so far including the Friday’s death, the government’s control room puts it at 180.
