Lauding the academic performance of Bangladeshi students in American institutions, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller on Saturday said the number of Bangladeshi students studying in colleges and universities across the US has risen by 5 percent over the last year.
“Bangladesh has become one of the top 25 countries sending students to the United States. Currently, there’re about 7,500 Bangladeshi students studying in the United States at undergraduate and graduate levels, a 5 percent increase over the previous academic year,” he said.
He was speaking at the inauguration event of EducationUSA Study Tour Fall 2019 University Fair arranged by EducationUSA Student Advising Center at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden hotel.
Representatives from 26 US universities, including Drew University, George Mason University, Hofstra University, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, University of Houston-Victoria and University of South Florida, provided students with the chance to discuss US higher education opportunities, areas of studies and programmes, and financial aid opportunities at the fair.
Miller said it was great to see the level of interest among Bangladeshi students to study in the USA. “We anticipate that a record number of students will attend to learn about studying in the United States,” he said.
He also mentioned that there are currently 4,700 accredited US colleges and universities who offer quality educational opportunities to students.
“I’ve been here eight months as the US Ambassador. I’ve met a lot of aspiring students who were thinking about studying in the United States...Bangladeshi students in US colleges and universities are absolute superstars,” he said praising the Bangladeshi students pursuing study in the USA.
Students had the ability to interact face-to-face with representatives from 14 US universities as well as a consortium of 12 other universities at the fair.
The fair also included an informational session about visa processing, discussion on higher education studies in the US and a bilingual panel event with Bangladeshi alumni of US universities.
EducationUSA is a US Department of State network of over 425 international student advising centres in 178 countries, including seven advisers based in Bangladesh, promoting US higher education to students around the world.
The 2019 Fall Tour will continue to Nepal and other South Asian countries throughout September to facilitate international student access to US higher education institutions.
