‘Drug peddler’ killed in Mymensingh ‘shootout’

An alleged ‘drug peddler’ was killed in a ‘shootout’ with police at Hobirbari area in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh early today.

The deceased was identified as Md Rubel, 31, son of Md Mozibur Rahman of Jamirdia village of the upazila, reports our local correspondent quoting Detective Branch (DB) officials.

Upon getting information that a group of alleged drug peddlers gathered at Dakhhin Hobirbari area of the upazila with an aim to peddle drugs, a DB team conducted a drive in the area around 2:20am, claimed Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of DB Police in Mymensingh who led the team.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the alleged criminals opened fire at them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, the OC claimed, adding that Assistant Sub-Inspector of DB Sujon Chandra was injured during the incident.

Later, they found bullet-hit Rubel lying on the ground while other managed to flee the scene, he said. Rubel was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries, added the DB personnel.

The body was kept at MMC morgue for autopsy and a case was filed in this connection.

Police also recovered 200 pieces of Yaba tablets and 100 grams of heroin from the spot.

Rubel was wanted in seven cases filed with different police stations, the OC said.
