BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has claimed that police and other law enforcement agencies are working according to the directives of Awami League higher-ups in the government.
He spoke about the matter while participating in a human chain, organized by the Bangladesh National Mahila Parishad, in front of the National Press Club on Sunday.
The senior BNP leader said: “Corruption surged in Bangladesh because police and other law enforcement agencies only work according to the instructions given by some powerful and influential people in the government, who only want to serve their personal agendas.”
Fakhrul then reiterated BNP's demand for the unconditional release of their Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been convicted in what BNP says were framed up charges.
Following the accusation, he demanded the Awami League government step down from power, and declare fresh election.
On February 8, 2018, Khaleda was sent to jail after being convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Later, she was also convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
Fakhrul then claimed that the government forced former chief justice SK Sinha to leave Bangladesh, and have made conditions unfavourable for BNP Senior Vice Chairperson Tareque Rahman’s return.
