HC stays arrest warrant against Dr Yunus

The High Court on Monday stayed until October 25 a lower court order that had issued a warrant for the arrest of Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus in three cases filed over sacking three employees of Grameen Communications.

The HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order responding to an appeal filed by Yunus’ lawyer Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud.

With the order, the trial proceeding of the three cases and the arrest warrant will remain stayed until October 25, said Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud.

On October 9, the Dhaka Labour Court issued arrest warrant for Dr Muhammad Yunus as he did not appear before the court responding to its previous order.

On July 3, three employees of Grameen Communications filed the cases against Yunus and two others with the Labour Court while the court asked them to appear before it on October 8.

Two other accused of the cases were – Naznin Sultana, Managing Director, and Khandakar Abu Abedin, Deputy Managing Director of Grameen Communications, secured bail as they appeared before the court on October 9.

According to the case statements, the trio was terminated from Grameen Communications as they tried to form a trade union at their workplace.
