Man dies of dengue in Khulna; 186 patients hospitalised in 24 hrs

A man died of dengue at Khulna City Medical College Hospital (KCMCH) while 186 new patients were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Sheikh, 77, of Brokkhogati village of Khulna’s Dighalia upazila.

Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr ASM Abdur Razzak said the man died of dengue while undergoing treatment at ICU.

Family sources said Ibrahim was suffering from fever and respiratory complications since Tuesday. He was shifted to KCMC after his condition deteriorated.

Sources at the civil surgeon’s office said the mosquito-borne disease has claimed 23 lives since January.

Bangladesh was hit by a massive dengue outbreak this year. Since January, 94,661 patients were hospitalised with dengue. Of them, 93,547 had made full recovery.

Currently, 866 patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals – 386 of them in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, of the new patients, 70 were admitted to hospitals in the capital.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research received 248 cases of suspected dengue deaths this year. It has so far reviewed 171 cases, and confirmed 107 of them.
