Moratorium on felling Jessore road trees

Dhaka, Jan 18 (Just News) : The High Court on Thursday imposed a six-month ban on cutting down century-old trees on Jessore-Benapole road trees.

Lawyers said the court order maintained status quo for six months, upon hearing a writ petition challenging the move to cut down the trees.

The move to fell the trees was taken to expand the 38-kilometre road from Doratana in Jessore town to Benapole land port.

A High Court bench comprising justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and justice Md Iqbal Kabir issued the order.

The writ was filed in the backdrop of protest against the district administration's decision taken on 6 January. The local member of parliament and influential persons of the administration and the area were part of the decision.

Such a decision to cut down the trees was also taken earlier, but in the face of protest the authorities had then decided to expand the road keeping status quo about the trees.
