Protest at DRMC, students give 72-hr ultimatum to Prothom Alo authorities

Students protesting over the death of 15-year-old Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) student Nayeemul Abrar have given Prothom Alo authorities an ultimatum of 72 hours to submit the report of the investigation by the probe committee formed over the death.

They also demanded the submission of CCTV footage from the event, during a human chain organized in front of the DRMC gate at Mohammadpur in Dhaka, on Saturday.

Nayeemul, a ninth-grader non-residential student of DRMC, was electrocuted by a power generator during a program organized by Kishor Alo, the youth supplement of leading newspaper Prothom Alo, on the school premises on Friday.

He was taken to Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Nayeemul's death drew massive criticism on social media, where people blamed the Prothom Alo authorities for trying to hide his death, and for mismanagement at the event.

Protestors who formed the human chain also demanded a written statement by the doctor who advised sending Nayeemul to a Mohakhali hospital, and a statement from the hospital authorities.

They also asked Prothom Alo to hold a press briefing, admitting their negligence and mismanagement regarding the incident.

DRMC formed a three member probe committee over the incident; the committee has been asked to submit its report within the next seven days.
