Chhatra League men throw principal into pond

A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute threw the institute's principal into a pond on Saturday for not complying with their illegal demand to sit for an examination.

Fortunately, the teacher managed to swim to the edge of the pond.

After the incident, Principal Farid Uddin Ahmed filed a case around 9pm at Chandrima police station accusing 50 people, mentioning the names of seven people, confirmed Officer-In-Charge Golam Mustafa.

The principal said that some students of the seventh semester, who are also Chhatra League activists, met him at his office in the morning. They demanded that the principal allow them to sit for an exam.

As they did not have required percentage of class attendance, he refused to comply with their demand, said the principal.

They then got angry with the principal and left the office.

The principal added that later, when he was returning to his office after Zohur prayers at around noon, two or three people wearing masks intercepted him and threw him into a pond on the campus.

The principal said that as the attackers were wearing masks, he could not identify them.

Mehedi Hasan Rigan, Chhatra League president of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute, said, "After looking at CCTV footage, we only identified Chhatra League Joint Secretary Kamal Hossen Shourav. No other Chhatra league activist was involved in this incident."

"We are looking into the matter and will take necessary action if anybody else is involved," he said, claiming that he was not present on the campus when the incident took place.
