Students continue rally seeking justice for Rubaiya

Several hundred students of Stamford University Bangladesh continued demonstrations for the second consecutive day on Saturday at Siddheshwari and Dhanmondi in Dhaka demanding justice for the alleged murder of their fellow Rubaiya Sharmin Rumpa on Wednesday.

The protesters said they would go for tougher agitation movement if the government fails to ensure quick justice to the murder.

Witnesses said the students in the presence of teachers held placards demanding justice for Rubaiya and also chanted slogans seeking women’s safety.

Ramna police officer-in-charge Manirul Islam said police could not arrest anyone yet in the murder case filed by Ramna police sub-inspector Abul Khayer although their investigation continued.

Ramna police on Wednesday found the body of Rubaiya, 21, a second year student of English at Stamford University, between two high-rises at Siddheshwari area, just opposite to Criminal Investigation Department headquarters.

Immediately, her body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post mortem examination as an unidentified body. Later her family members identified the body as Rubaiya, daughter of Rokan Uddin, an inspector of the police posted in Habiganganj.

Rubaiya used to live with her family at Shantibagh in the capital.

Dhaka Medical College forensic department head Sohel Mahmud said the victim fell from height and died.

Manirul Islam said they were not sure whether she was killed or the incident was a suicide.

The demonstrating student alleged the victim might be killed after she was raped.

Police said after post mortem examination report they could be sure about many things of the incident.
