5 more die; death toll from Keraniganj fire now 19

Five more people, who were severely burnt in the deadly fire at a Keraniganj plastic factory on Wednesday, died in Dhaka today, raising the death toll to 19.

Suman Dewan, 25, Mustakim, 22, Abdur Razzak, 45, and Abu Sayed, 16, succumbed at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the institute between 6:30am and 6:00pm, Dr Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of the Burn Units across the country, told The Daily Star.

They were on life support at the institute since they suffered injuries in the deadly fire, Dr Samanta added.

Meanwhile, Durjoy Das, 22, who was taken to his Chunkutia home in Keraniganj with 100 per cent burns died around 6:00pm, his father Mintu Das confirmed.

A devastating fire engulfed the Prime Pet and Plastic Industry factory in Keraniganj’s Chunkutia on Wednesday.

Firefighters recovered one charred body from the factory and rescued 33 others who were hospitalised.

Later, 13 more people succumbed to their injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute

As many as 14 others are battling for their lives at the hospital, among whom, six are on life support.

Most of them are in critical condition with 50 to 100 percent of their bodies burnt, doctors said.

The plastics factory had been operating without permission for years, according to the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments.

The fire-ravaged plastic factory in Keraniganj, with around 15,000 sqft floor space, had a single gate for entry and exit and no emergency exits whatsoever.

Locals alleged that the authorities concerned turned a blind eye to the lack of safety measures at the factory even though it had been producing disposable plastic cups and plates for around 10 years and had witnessed two other fire incidents this year alone.

Keraniganj upazila administration on Friday sealed off the factory.
