Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday warned the law enforcers and officials concerned that no negligence in election duty will be tolerated.
“No negligence will be tolerated. If we receive any allegation, we’ll take action following investigations against those who’re involved in anomalies. There’ll be no compromise,” he said.
The CEC issued the note of warning while addressing a law-and-order meeting over the elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation, slated for February 1.
The meeting was held with the CEC in the chair at Nirbachan Bhaban.
Three election commissioners, top representatives of law enforcement agencies, the EC senior secretary, and officials of the ministries concerned were present at the meeting.
Nurul Huda expressed satisfaction over the prevailing environment ahead of the elections adding that the Commission is sincere about holding the polls in a free, fair and credible manner.
“Now, all eyes on the Dhaka city elections. We’ve taken a strict stance. There has been an enthusiasm among people over the mega festival of vote. You’ll have to discharge you duty properly from your respective positions realising its importance,” he said.
Pointing at the law enforcers and officials engaged in polls duty, the CEC said the EC does not want to hear any complaints of irregularities and negligence. “Settle every dispute properly in the field,” the CEC asked them.
Talking about electronic voting machine (EVM), he said it will not be possible to cast fake votes with the machine to be used in the two city corporation elections.
“Our EVM is of high quality. No fake vote can be cast with it,” he said.
About the reported attack on BNP mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Tabith Awal, the CEC said it is an unexpected because the commission has taken steps in this regard.
The EC has a plan to deploy some 50,000 law enforcers in the election to Dhaka north and south city corporations. The Commission also has a plan to deploy law enforcers as mobile ad striking forces two days before the elections to maintain the law and order in the election areas.
