DU students demand immediate punishment of attackers

Students of Dhaka University demonstrated on the campus on Thursday protesting torture on four of their fellows allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders at Zahurul Haque hall.

Student Unity against Violence, an alliance of 12 student organizations, held a protest rally in front of Raju Sculpture around 2pm, demanding immediate punishment of the torturers.

Addressing the rally, Dhaka University Central Student Union(Ducsu) vice-president Nurul Haque Nur said Chhatra League has established a reign of terror on university campuses across the country.

He also urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to control the activities of BCL men.

Demanding resignation of the university proctor, he said the university authorities failed to protect the general students.

Besides, around 60 students brought out the procession from the Faculty of Business Studies and paraded the main points of the campus.

Mukim Chowdhury, one of the victims and a second-year student of Tourism and Hospitality Management Department, has been observing a sit-in protest in front of Raju Sculpture since Wednesday.

“I have no link with Chhatra Shibir. The BCL men intentionally tortured us. They have no right to torture any student of the university,” Mukim said adding “I want expulsion of those who assaulted us. I’ll continue my protest until my demands are met.”

Some BCL men on Tuesday night allegedly assaulted four students at Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall suspecting their involvement in the politics of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.
