A day before the hearing on a bail petition filed by their party chief Begum Khaleda Zia with the High Court, BNP standing committee members discussed legal issues with her lawyers and worked out their next course of action.

The meeting was held at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan in the evening.

However, the party leaders did not brief reporters about the meeting outcome.

A BNP standing committee member, wishing anonymity, said they elaborately discussed the legal issues regarding Khaleda’s release from jail.

He said they suggested the lawyers to seek the court’s directive to produce the BNP chief before it if the BSMMU’s medical report is not satisfactory.

He said they also discussed what their party will do if Khaleda is granted bail or not granted bail.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku were present.

Besides, Khaleda’s lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali, Zainul Abedin and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon attended the meeting.

Earlier in the day, the authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) submitted a report on Khaleda Zia’s health condition to the Supreme Court Registrar General.

The report will be submitted before a High Court (HC) bench which is scheduled to further hear a bail petition of Khaleda in Zia Charitable Trust case on Thursday.

On Sunday last, the HC bench asked BSMMU Vice Chancellor to submit a report on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health condition by 5 pm today (Wednesday) and fixed February 27 (Thursday) for the next hearing on the bail petition.

On February 19, the BNP chief filed a fresh petition with the High Court seeking bail in the case, citing illness.

Khaleda has been in prison since February 8, 2018 as she was convicted in the cases.
