Legal notice issued to punish ward councillor Aminur Rahman

A legal notice has been sent to the government to take action against ward councillor Aminur Rahman Amin, who recently took a very hands-on approach to ensure social distancing and lockdown in Tangail Pourashava area.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate J R Khan Robin sent the legal notice to the Inspector general of Police, superintendent of police of Tangail and officer in charge of Tangail Model Police Station via email on Thursday.

A video which hit the social media on April 8, showed Aminur charging batons on people who were out wandering in the streets without proper reason in various areas of Tangail city.

The notice read, the government has taken some steps to protect the spread of coronavirus and the law enforcement agencies along with others have been playing a vital role in implementing the decision of the government, in view to protect the people from the spread of the said virus.

The notice also said, at present, a good number of unauthorized persons have been trying to play a role illegally to implement the decision of the government with a view to protecting the people from the effect of the said virus.

As an example on 8th April 2020, Aminur Rahman Amin, councillor of ward number 12 at the Tangail Pourashava and general secretary of CNG-run Auto-rickshaw and Tempo Shramik Union of Tangail along with others have beaten up local people, though they are neither members of the law enforcement agencies nor entitled to impose any such type of punishment which is not described in the law of the country, the notice said.

According to Pourashava Ain 2009, he along with others have committed criminal offences and also violated the mandate of their functions.

As such, he along with the others should be punished, and if such type of activities continues, people of the country will suffer irreparable loss and injury, the notice said.

The notice requested the respondents to take necessary legal steps against Aminur and others along with lodging First Information Report (FIR) within 24 hours from receiving this notice, otherwise, the Advocate would be compelled to file a writ petition with the High Court.
