Renowned haematologist and laboratory medicine specialist Prof Col (Retd) Dr Md Moniruzzaman has died from coronavirus infection.

He breathed his last around 5:30pm at his Mirpur DOHS residence in Dhaka on Sunday, Bangla Tribune reported, quoting the Foundation for Doctors' Safety, Rights and Responsibilities (FDSR) on Monday.

Dr Moniruzzaman was the chief haematologist at Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Hospital (AKMMCH).

He becomes the second doctor to have died from the deadly virus in Bangladesh.

Hospital sources said Dr Moniruzzaman went back home after work on Sunday afternoon and fell ill. He was taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) where on-duty doctors declared him dead. He was then tested for Covid-19 and was found positive.

Family sources told Bangla Tribune that Dr Moniruzzaman had been suffering from fever and chest pain for the last few days.

Following the conformation, four doctors at AKMMCH’s haematology department have been sent to home quarantine and the department is being disinfected.
