Employees of New Market, Gausia shops take to the street

Employees of shops at the Dhaka New Market and Gausia Market have taken to the street, as several other malls in the capital have reopened ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.

Some 100 workers started demonstrating on the street in front of the Gausia Market on Sunday, demanding the markets to be opened or their due salaries to be cleared.

The protestors left around 1pm before announcing that they would continue the demonstrations on Monday.

Some shops have reopened in different parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chittagong, while some businessmen have kept their shops shut due to dilemma amid the coronavirus fear.

The authorities of two largest shopping malls in the capital, Bashundhara City and Jamuna Future Park, decided not to reopen their markets.

On May 5, the government allowed businesspeople to keep shops and shopping malls open for six hours from 10am to 4pm every day from Sunday, after maintaining health guidelines during the general holidays.

Amid a surge of new coronavirus cases, the government extended general holidays until May 16. The government also decided to keep all educational institutions in Bangladesh closed until May 30.

Health experts warned that the reopening of shops and shopping malls ahead of Eid will lead to a rise in the coronavirus cases.

Bangladesh has so far confirmed 13,770 coronavirus cases and 214 deaths.
