Anisuzzaman laid to rest with state honours

National Professor Anisuzzaman, who died Thursday afternoon at the Combined Millitary Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 83, was buried on the grave of his father at capital’s Azimpur graveyard with state honours Friday morning.

The burial ended at about 10:45am after prolific writer and educator’s namaz-e-janaza was held at the graveyard, his son Ananda Zaman said.

State honours were also given to Anisuzzman at the grave yard, he said.

Ananda Zaman said that his father was buried following World Health Organisation guidelines as he was tested COVID-19 positive.

Anisuzzaman was awarded guard of honour by assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Md Rabiul Alam on behalf of the Dhaka district administration. Dhaka South city social welfare officer Shahadot Hossain and Rajarbagh police lines sub-inspector Abdur Rahman were also present.

Besides Ananda Zaman, the national professor’s brother Akteruzzaman and son-in-law Azimul Haq were present during the burial.

State Minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid and Bengal Group chairman Abul Khair Litu were also present.

The national professor’s body was taken to the graveyard from CMH sometimes after 9:30am.

Talking to reporters at Azimpur graveyard, Ananda Zaman thanked prime minister Sheikh Hasina and all those who extended support for his father.

Dhaka University professor emeritus Anisuzzaman, also a leading member of the country’s civil society, was shifted to the CMH from another hospital in Dhaka on May 9 after his health condition deteriorated, family members said.

Anisuzzaman, also a freedom fighter, was admitted to the Universal Cardiac Hospital in the city on April 29 with various health complications. As his condition deteriorated, he was taken to the intensive care unit of the hospital on May 2.

President Md Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina as well as different political, socio-cultural and professional organisations expressed condolences at the death of the noted academic.

Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod president Hasanul Huq Inu and general secretary Shirin Akhter, Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhteruzzaman, Bangladesh University of Professionals VC major general Ataul Hakim Sarwar Hasan, Bangladesh Afro-Asian Peoples Solidarity Organization acting secretary general Hasan Tarique Chowdhury Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Ekatturer Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee in separate statements expressed their deep shock at his death.
