Signal 4 for maritime ports as Cyclone Amphan intensifies

Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Sunday asked all maritime ports to hoist signal four as cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ over southeast bay and adjoining southwest bay moved nortwestwards over the same area.

The cyclone was centred about 1,325 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 1,260 km southsouthwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1,250 km south-southwest of Mongla port and 1,230 km south-southwest of Payra port at 12:00pm.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 54km of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre, said a special weather bulletin.

All fishing boats and trawlers over north bay and deep sea have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.

They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.

Indian Meteorological Department said that Cyclone Amphan might cross West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Dwip in India and Hatiya in Bangladesh in the afternoon or evening of May 20.

They said that sea condition would remain very high over southwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours.
