Police have quizzed cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore along with three others at the jail gate in connection with a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).
Ramna police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Biplob Kumar Biswas, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, interrogated Kishore, writer Mushtaq Ahmed, Didarul Islam Bhuiyan, an activist of a platform called “Rastrachinta” and businessman Minhaj Mannan Emon, on June 27 and 28 and sent a forwarding report to the court on Tuesday.
In the report, he said that the four accused had made almost identical statements but did not confess to doing anything of an anti-government nature.
“However, we got some important information from them about the incident. We are verifying it. The four should be in jail until the investigation is completed,” added SI Biplob.
Earlier, the law enforcers arrested four persons, including a writer and a cartoonist, after the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed a case against 11 individuals under the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA), claiming that their activities on social media had led to confusion, instability and chaos among the people.
Among the accused are expatriate journalists Tasneem Khalil and Shahed Alam, Saer Zulkarnain, Ashiq Imran, Philipp Schumacher, Swapan Jahid, Mustaque Ahmed and blogger Asif Mohiuddin.
The detained four were produced in court on May 6 and 7 respectively and were sent to jail.
Later, on June 16, a virtual court in Dhaka turned down both the bail and remand petitions of the four accused, who were sent back to jail.
However, after the hearing, the court directed the IO of the case to grill the four accused at the jail gate within two days of the seven working days, in connection with the case.
Earlier on May 7, the IO of the case produced them before the court seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation.
