Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday called on the Awami League government to take immediate diplomatic steps for sending back Rohingyas to their country.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a press statement said that the government had failed to send back Rohingyas to Myanmar.

A new situation has emerged in Myanmar that may hamper the repatriation on the displaced Rohingyas, Fakhrul said.

‘For this, we strongly demand that the government should take immediate diplomatic steps to expedite the Rohingya repatriation,’ Fakhrul said.

Fakhrul expressed concern over the cancellation of an elected parliament led by Aung San Suu Kyi through a military coup on Monday.

The people in Bangladesh want a popularly elected and democratic government in Myanmar, he added.

Myanmar military staged a coup and seized the power on Monday morning.
