Attacks on Hindus: BNP delegation to visit affected areas

Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has decided to send its delegation to the affected areas where the Hindu community’s Puja mandaps, houses and other infrastructures came under attack.

A spate of attacks on mandaps was witnessed during Durga Puja following a report that a copy of the Quran was found on the thigh of an idol at a Durga Puja mandap in Cumilla on October 13.

The BNP has taken the decision at its standing committee meeting held on Sunday night chaired by party acting chairman Tarique Rahman, said a press release.
It said that the party made two committees in this regard.

A committee headed by BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy to visit the areas to see the situation and to convey condolences to the families affected on behalf of the BNP.

Another committee was formed headed by Supreme Court Bar Association secretary Ruhul Kuddus Kajol to investigate the incidents, the release said.

It said that the committees were asked to submit their reports to the party central committee as soon as possible.

In the release, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the government was trying to implement a ‘hidden agenda’ by slowing down the internet speed and creating difficulty in accessing social media and other digital platforms.

Besides, at a programme in Dhaka, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the government planned and initiated the incidents across the country.

He said that the government was involved in the attack on the Cumilla puja mandaps.

‘After it failed to control the commodity price hike and other crises, the ruling Awami League created the unrest to divert people’s attention from these issues,’ he added.
