Still fighting for democracy : Mirza Alamgir

Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said fighting for democracy even after 52 years of independence is unfortunate.

"It is our misfortune that we haven't achieved the goal for which we fought [the Liberation War]. Even after 52 years of independence, we have to give our lives for democracy. We have to fight for it. We have lost our right to vote. We have lost our right to speak freely," Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the party, said.

He came up with the remark today after paying tribute to the War martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar marking the 53rd Independence and National Day.

"In line with the spirit of independence, it was our hope, desire to establish a democratic state, to establish a democratic society. But today, the autocratic-authoritarian Awami League government is eliminating the opposition to establish a one-party government."

Alleging that BNP leaders and activists are being harassed by "false" cases, he said, "More than 35 lakh leaders and activists are being harassed in false cases."

Fakhrul expressed hope of establishing democracy through a struggle by uniting democracy-loving people.

"We have started the struggle to bring back democracy, to bring back the right to vote, to bring the price of rice, dal and oil to a tolerable level and to make the country a truly democratic state. And we will continue our struggle."

BNP standing committee members Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Abdul Moyeen Khan and senior leaders of the party were present during the tribute.
