Govt seeks stay on Khaleda Zia’s bail order

Dhaka, May 28 (Just News): Hours after a High Court bench granted bail for six months to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in two Cumilla cases on Monday, the government has filed a petition with the chamber judge seeking a stay on the HC order.

The hearing on the stay petition is likely to be held anytime today, Monday, said deputy attorney general Md Bashir Ullah.

Earlier in the morning, the High Court granted bail for six months to BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in two cases of Cumilla and rejected the bail petition in a defamation case of Narail.

A bench of justice AKM Asaduzzaman and justice JBM Hasan came up with the order.

Of the cases, two were filed against Khaleda Zia in Cumilla on charge of plotting to carry out subversive acts and another in Narail on defamation charges.

The former prime minister has now been kept at the abandoned central jail at Nazimuddin Road after a special judge court sentenced her to seven years in jail and sent her to jail on 8 February this year.
