Khaleda Zia still in jail due to delay in bail hearing

Dhaka, Sep 3 (Just News): BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia is still in jail due to delays in hearing her applications seeking bails in two more cases, her lawyers said.

Until now, she got bails in 26 cases including the Zia Orphanage Trust Fund case in which she was jailed for five years in February.

She has been implicated in 34 cases.

Her two applications seeking bails are pending with two courts in Comilla.

In 2015, the two separate cases were filed against her allegedly for ordering burning a covered van at Chouddagram in January 2015 and the 2nd one for ordering burning a bus at Chouddagram in February 2015.

Her lawyers said that the government was trying best to disqualify her from contesting the general election expected to be held in December.

On August 30, the Comilla Special Tribunal 1 judge KM Shamsul Alam set September 12 to hear her application seeking bail in the case relating to burning a covered van.
A judicial magistrate’s court in Comilla set September 5 to hear her application seeking bail in the bus burning case.

Her lawyer Quimul Haque Rinku said that that lower court set long dates to hear her bail applications under the government’s influence.

With regard to the case of burning the covered van, he said, Comilla special tribunal 1 flouted a HC directive to dispose of her bail petition in seven days.-
