Oikyafront is still rigid on its stance over polls: Rob

Dhaka, Nov 12 (Just News): Jatiya Oikyafront leader ASM Abdur Rob today said the opposition alliance is still rigid on its stance on deferment of the election by a month.

“The Oikyafront will announce a programme to realise the demand,” Rob, also president of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), told reporters after emerging from a meeting in Dhaka this evening.

The top brass of the newly formed alliance held the meeting at Oikyafront’s key leader Dr Kamal Hossain’s chamber in Motijheel to discuss the issue this afternoon.

Amid demands from different political parties and alliances, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today announced that the 11th parliamentary elections will be held on December 30 instead of December 23.

The last date for submission of nomination papers has been fixed November 28, the CEC said.

About the fresh polls date, Rob said the first day of the English New Year will be observed a day after December 30.

“There will be no diplomats as well as the election observers in the country at that time. The government has taken the decision to hold the election on December 30 with a motive,” he said.

Oikyafront leaders, before announcement of the election schedule, repeatedly urged the EC not to announce the polls schedule until the dialogue is end. Since the polls schedule announcement on November 8, they have been demanding deferment of the previous election schedule by a month.

“We will remain rigid on our demand. We will announce next course of programme if our demand is not met,” Rob warned.

It is still possible to announce a fresh schedule for the election if the government wants so, the JSD leader added.
