Oikayfront threatens protests if arrests not stopped

Dhaka, Dec 1 (Just News): The Jatiya Oikayfront on Saturday threatened to go for tougher protests if the current spree of arrest of its leaders and activists ahead of the December 30 parliamentary elections was not stopped.

At a press conference at the National Press Club, front spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general, asked the government to stop immediately arrest of opposition leaders and activists across the country and release of the arrested leaders and activists.

Chief of the opposition alliance Dr Kamal Hossain, also the Gono Forum president, asked the Election Commission and the government to ensure a level playing field so the voters could exercise their franchise freely in the elections.

He said the country’s independence and sovereignty might be fallen at risk if the elections were not held in a free, fair and neutral manner.

He also reiterated his call for guarding the polling stations to prevent vote rigging.

Kamal said that wholesale arrest of the opposition leaders and activists, candidates, citizens and voters was contrary to the fair and neutral polls.
