EC following government orders: BNP

Dhaka, Dec 9 (Just News): BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said the Election Commission is following government orders.

He remarked this on Sunday—a day after the commission rejected all three of her appeals to accept her nominations.

“BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's nomination has been rejected on government orders,” Rizvi told a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters.

Khaleda Zia– who has been in jail since February 8 after being sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in a corruption case, filed nominations for the Bogra 6 and 7, as well as Feni 1, constituencies.

Her nominations were rejected by returning officers, during the period for scrutiny, because of her convictions in graft cases.

Rizvi furthered that the commission declared many leaders’ candidacies legal, yet: “The chief election commissioner was instructed [by the government] to declare Khaleda Zia’s nomination illegal.”

He said the government is doing everything possible to keep the Zia family away from politics.

The senior BNP leader demanded the immediate release of all arrested party leaders and activists.
