Over 61pc Oikya Front candidates face cases: Shujan

Dhaka, Dec 24 (Just News): At least 61.67 per cent of the opposition Jatiya Oikya Front candidates contesting the 11th general election are facing cases while 6.69 per cent of the ruling Awami League alliance candidates have cases against them, according to an analysis of Sushashaner Jonno Nagorik – Shujan.

Shujan, a non-government organisation working for good governance, revealed the information analysing the affidavits of the 1,842 candidates vying for the December 30 elections at a press conference at National Press Club on Monday.

Besides, at least 11.56 per cent of the candidates of Left Democratic Alliance facing cases, 5.39 per cent of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, 8.65 per cent of other political party candidates and 19.49 per cent of independent candidates have cases against them.

Among the candidates of Jatiya Oikya Front, 14.29 per cent have cases under section 302 of CrPC while one per cent of Awami League alliance candidates are accused of similar charge.

Shujan also said that their analysis found 52.71 per cent of the total candidates contesting the upcoming national elections are businessmen.

Among the candidates from business background, 60.20 per cent are from Awami League alliance and 64.11 per cent are from the Jatiya Oikya Front.

Shujan also disclosed their educational qualifications saying that around 64.87 per cent of the total candidates are graduates with 80.93 per cent from Awami League alliance and 80.13 per cent from Jatiya Oikya Front and 62.22 per cent from Left Democratic Alliance.

Among the candidates, 7.8 per cent have income over Tk 1 crore. Among them, 26.09 per cent are from AL alliance and 11.85 per cent from Jatiya Oikya Front.

Besides, 12.10 per cent candidates have income of over Tk 50 lakh with 44.06 per cent from Awami League alliance and 19.51 per cent from Jatiya Oikya Front.

In terms of property, 26.98 per cent of the candidates have property amounting over Tk 1 crore with 80.60 from Awami League alliance and 52.27 per cent from Jatiya Oikya Front.

Shujan said they believe that the actual information related to the property and income is not reflected in the candidates’ affidavit.

Shujan said 66 women candidates are contesting this elections with 22 from Awami League alliance, 13 from Jatiya Oikya Front, four from Left Democratic Alliance and 22 from other political parties.

From the minority communities, 78 candidates are contesting the elections with 18 from Awami League alliance, 13 from Jatiya Oikya Front, 27 from Left Democratic Alliance and 23 from other political parties.

Speaking at the press conference, Shujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said the Election Commission is largely reluctant to properly analyse the affidavits of the candidates as he said many candidates have either concealed information or provided wrong information, which were amount to cancelation of the candidature.

‘We did not see any such analysis and cancellation of the candidature of candidates by the EC officials this time,’ he said.

Badiul Alam said still the EC can scrutinise the information after election and announce them invalid if found anomalies in their provided information.
