Noakhali gang-rape no isolated incident

Noakhali gang-rape no isolated incident

The gang-rape of a woman in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila after the December 30 general election was not an isolated incident, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Mujahidul Islam Selim said today.

“This is not an isolated incident. There is an autocratic regime ruling over the country, and that is why such incidents are happening,” he alleged.

The CPB chief was talking to journalists at Mukti Bhaban in Dhaka’s Paltan this morning. The press conference was organised in protest against the gang-rape incident.

Earlier on January 4, leaders of CPB-led Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) went to Noakhali’s Subarnachar to visit the victim as the incident sparked outrage across the country.

Speakers at the programme also demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits and called upon authorities concerned to try them under speedy trial tribunal.

They also urged the authorities concerned to ensure proper medical treatment to the victim and security to her and her family as they were being threatened by the culprits who are still absconding.

So far, eight people including Awami League leader Ruhul Amin were arrested in connection with the rape incident.

However, Ruhul Amin, the publicity affairs secretary of Subarnachar AL, was expelled from the party on charge of ordering his accomplices to rape the woman for voting in favour of BNP’s electoral symbol.

Earlier yesterday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with top leaders of Jatiya Oikyafront visited the victim, who is now undergoing treatment at Noakhali Sadar Hospital.
