Opposition can be outside parliament for people

Jailed Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Sunday said that an opposition could remain outside of parliament for the people.

She made the remarks at the makeshift court set up inside Old Dhaka Central Jail during a hearing on the Niko graft case.

During today’s hearing, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, an accused in the case, told the court: “We are in danger as we are in the opposition.”

Countering Moudud’s speech, one of the defense lawyers said: “You (BNP) are not even in the parliament as opposition at present.”

Replying to the lawyers’ remarks, Khaleda Zia said: “The opposition is not just in parliament, it may also exist outside parliament. Those who take to the streets to fight to realize the demands and rights of the people: they are the opposition. But now we see the opposition is also with the government.”
